Travel eSIM: how to stay connected abroad without roaming charges

Roaming on your home number can be expensive, and hunting for a SIM shop after a long flight is no fun. A travel eSIM solves both: you buy a data plan online, install it on your phone, and it connects when you arrive.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you install a plan by scanning a QR code or following a link. Most recent phones can hold several eSIMs and use one alongside your regular SIM.
Does my phone support it?
Many newer iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models support eSIM, but not every model or every country version does. Your phone must also be unlocked (not tied to one network). Check your phone’s settings for an “Add eSIM” or “Add mobile plan” option, or check our list of supported devices when you buy.
How to set it up
- Choose a plan for your destination with enough data for your trip.
- Install it before you travel while you have good Wi-Fi — installation needs an internet connection.
- Keep it switched off until you land if you do not want the plan’s validity to start early (plans differ; check your plan’s details).
- When you arrive, turn on the eSIM line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line if your phone asks.
- Keep your home SIM for calls and texts if you like — only mobile data needs to use the eSIM.
Tips
- Maps, messaging and ride apps use little data; video calls and streaming use a lot. Choose a plan to match.
- Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Use WhatsApp or other apps for calls.
- Do not delete the eSIM until your trip is over.
Browse eSIM plans by country and get connected before you fly.
